Poolside Beauty

If you are spending time at the pool this summer, either on holiday or the town where you live, it really is important to look after your skin and hair from the damaging effects the sun, heat and chlorinated water. On my recent holiday, there were a few products that really stood out to help to minimise these effects.

After a dip in the pool, once dried, it really is essential that you apply sunscreen again, as unless it is waterproof, much of it may get washed off in the pool. My favourite sunscreen this summer is the Clarins Sun Care Oil Spray* which has a UVA/UVB 30 protection and is a light oil which instantly is absorbed in to the skin without feeling sticky or greasy. It smells incredible and also doubles up as a SPF for your hair too. I have reviewed this in full here. For the face, I use my trusted Clinique City Block Sheer SPF 25, which I apply daily regardless of rain or shine. It contains physical sunscreens, so perfect if you are allergic to chemical sunscreens like me without fear of breakouts and can be topped up during the day if you are at the pool or out in the sun. We cannot forget the lips either, burnt lips aren’t cute so I liberally apply the Palmers Cocoa Butter Formula Ultra Moisturising Lip Balm in Dark Chocolate & Mint which tastes amazing and has a SPF 15 to protect the lips.

Let’s talk about hair now! I used to neglect my hair during summer holidays but having fine, highlighted, long hair, it is particularly susceptible to damage from the sun, heat and chemicals in the water and can leave it dry and split. I recently talked about the products I use on holiday to condition my hair (post here), but while I am by the pool, I like to carry on my treatments when I can. After towel drying my hair, I comb through it using The Wet Brush*, an amazing detangler which glides though wet hair removing any tangles. I then take a blob of Charles Worthington Moisture Seal Hair Healer Leave-In Conditioner, rub it through the ends and brush through again. This really helps to keep the hair moisturised so as not to dry out in the sun. Finally I add a spritz of the Clarins spray as mentioned above to protect it from the suns damaging effects and make it smell wonderful!

So there are my top tips for protecting by the pool. Also remember to stay hydrated from the inside too by keeping a glass or bottle of water with you too!
