I try to wear sunscreen on my face all year round, and now summer is well under way, it is vital that your skin is protected from the damaging UVA/UVB rays. As much as I love to protect my skin, I have to be careful which ones I use on my face as a lot of them use chemical sunscreens which break me out so badly. The main culprit for me is Avobenzone, however I try to avoid any products that contain chemical sunscreens for fear of breaking out. I therefore prefer to use products containing physical sunscreens, which are Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide.
I was delighted to see that one of my favorite make up brands, Tarte have newly released a non-chemical sunscreen, Tarteguard 30 which I was instantly drawn to because of the the vibrant purple packaging. This comes in two sizes, 1.7oz ($32) and 0.4oz ($12), I chose the latter just to test it out to see if I liked it before I indulged on the bigger size.
The product itself is a very lightweight lotion that appears white when dispensed, this however disappears when blended into the skin. It is absorbed quickly and doesn’t feel tacky or greasy on the skin. The only thing I would say is having more oily skin in the summer, my make-up did slip a little when using this, so it may be better suited to more normal to dry skin types. I usually use the Clinique City Block, which actually doubles as a primer and I definitely prefer this for under make up. The other slight negative for me is the strong scent it has to it, which smells like the ocean, a smell that I would usually love, but unfortunately it is a bit overpowering for me.
That said, Tarteguard has not broken me out at all, which is my main prerogative when finding a sunscreen for my face and I really like how weightless it feels on my skin. I am therefore going to keep it in my pool bag and use on no make up days when I am at the pool over the summer as it has a decent SPF of 30 which is perfect for keeping my face protected.
Tarteguard is available from Sephora.
